About the Course
Struggling to find fresh story ideas that actually resonate? You're not alone. Most writers hit a wall because they're drawing from the same shallow well of inspiration. But here's the secret: the world's greatest stories have already been written—they just need your unique twist. ## Discover the Ancient Story Patterns That Still Power Great Fiction Today Long before novels, movies, television, and streaming dramas, human beings were telling stories about gods, heroes, monsters, tricksters, forbidden knowledge, impossible journeys, lost worlds, creation, destruction, love, revenge, sacrifice, and transformation. Those stories survived for thousands of years for a reason. They work. The great myths of the world contain some of the strongest storytelling ideas ever created, and once you understand how they work, you can use their underlying patterns to make your own fiction richer, deeper, and more memorable. This course is designed to help you do exactly that. Rather than simply studying mythology as history, you'll explore myths as a writer. You'll look at how ancient storytellers created unforgettable heroes, powerful conflicts, symbolic settings, moral dilemmas, dramatic journeys, and worlds filled with meaning. Then you'll learn how to take those insights and transform them into original stories of your own. ## Explore the Stories That Shaped Civilization Throughout the course, you'll travel through some of the world's most fascinating storytelling traditions. You'll explore Greek and Roman mythology and discover what characters such as Odysseus, Achilles, Hercules, Athena, Zeus, and Aeneas can teach us about ambition, courage, pride, intelligence, duty, weakness, and character development. You'll delve into ancient Sumerian mythology and examine some of humanity's earliest surviving creation stories, discovering how ideas of cause and effect, incomplete worlds, creation, responsibility, and unintended consequences can inspire modern plots. You'll explore Mayan traditions, including the remarkable stories preserved in the *Popol Vuh*, and examine the Hero Twins, Xibalba, creation through repeated attempts, transformation, pride, cleverness, and renewal. You'll also consider Indigenous storytelling traditions from around the world, including Māori, Inuit, Hopi, Tlingit, Aboriginal Australian, and other cultural traditions, paying particular attention to the powerful relationships between story, landscape, history, identity, responsibility, and community. The goal is never simply to collect unusual myths. The goal is to understand why these stories work. ## Discover the Story Patterns Hidden Beneath the Myths Once you begin looking beneath the gods, monsters, magical objects, and supernatural events, mythology becomes an extraordinary writer's toolbox. You'll examine the heroic journey, the descent into the underworld, the trickster who challenges authority, the creator who loses control of a creation, the younger generation forced to repair the mistakes of the older one, the arrogant ruler brought down by pride, and the character who must sacrifice something valuable in order to succeed. These patterns appear again and again because they reflect human experience. * A journey into the underworld can become a detective entering the criminal world. * A stolen divine fire can become dangerous technology. * A cursed king can become a corrupt corporate leader. * A creation myth can inspire a science fiction story about artificial intelligence. * A trickster can become a hacker, con artist, journalist, or rebellious outsider. The mythology provides the spark. You create the new story. ## Build Stronger Characters Mythological heroes are rarely perfect, and that is precisely why they remain interesting. * Achilles has courage but also pride. * Odysseus has intelligence but also arrogance. * Hercules has extraordinary strength but faces problems that strength cannot solve. * Aeneas is driven by duty even when duty conflicts with personal desire. These characters demonstrate one of the most powerful techniques in fiction: giving your protagonist a strength that can also become a weakness. You'll learn how to use this principle to build characters with contradictions, vulnerabilities, desires, responsibilities, and internal conflicts. * Instead of creating a hero who is simply brave, you'll learn to ask when bravery becomes recklessness. * Instead of creating an intelligent protagonist, you'll ask when cleverness becomes manipulation. * Instead of creating a fiercely independent character, you'll explore what happens when independence becomes isolation. Those contradictions are where memorable character arcs begin. ## Make Your Setting Matter One of the most valuable lessons from mythology is that landscape is rarely just scenery. Mountains, rivers, forests, oceans, deserts, caves, islands, and underground worlds often carry history, identity, danger, memory, and meaning. In this course, you'll learn how to give your own settings the same kind of narrative power. * A town can carry generations of secrets. * A river can divide families. * A ruined building can preserve forgotten history. * A lake can conceal evidence of an earlier civilization. A fictional world becomes more convincing when its geography influences how people live, what they believe, what they fear, and what they value. Instead of merely describing settings, you'll learn how to make them generate story. ## Create Original Myths and Narratives This course is not about copying existing mythology. It is about learning from it. You'll discover how to strip a myth down to its underlying storytelling structure and then rebuild that structure inside a completely original narrative. * Perhaps you take the pattern of someone entering a dangerous hidden world to recover a loved one. * Perhaps you begin with a civilization that has forgotten why an ancient rule exists. * Perhaps you create a protagonist whose greatest strength eventually causes their greatest mistake. * Perhaps you build a society around a resource so important that its survival becomes part of the culture's oldest stories. From those foundations, you can create fantasy, horror, crime, science fiction, romance, historical fiction, literary fiction, or almost any other genre. The ancient pattern gives you momentum. Your imagination gives it a new life. ## Learn to Use Myth Respectfully The course also explores an important distinction between studying ancient storytelling patterns and casually borrowing sacred or culturally specific material. You'll learn why myths need to be understood within their cultural context, particularly when engaging with living Indigenous traditions. Rather than lifting sacred stories, symbols, ceremonies, or figures out of their cultures, you'll learn to identify broader storytelling principles such as the relationship between place and memory, individual desire and communal responsibility, knowledge and obligation, or tradition and change. That approach makes your writing both more respectful and more original. ## Turn Mythic Ideas Into a Complete Story By the end of the course, you'll bring everything together. You'll choose a mythic pattern that inspires you, create an original protagonist, build a setting that generates conflict, develop a plot through cause and effect, create meaningful allies and antagonists, and shape a climax that forces the protagonist to change. You'll also learn how to revise the resulting story, strengthen character motivation, improve pacing, refine your ending, and prepare the work for readers. Finally, you'll explore best practices for sharing your writing through workshops, critique groups, trusted readers, and online writing communities. The aim is not simply to study mythology. It is to finish the course with new storytelling ideas and the confidence to use them. ## Ancient Stories. New Possibilities. The gods may have changed. The monsters may have changed. The worlds may have changed. But writers are still asking the same questions. Now you can use them to power yours. ## Enroll in Mythology for Storytellers Today Explore ancient stories, uncover timeless storytelling techniques, create richer characters, build more meaningful worlds, and discover how mythic structures can inspire completely original fiction. Meet Your Guide
I've spent years studying mythology across cultures, fascinated by how these ancient stories continue to shape modern storytelling. What started as personal curiosity became a mission: to show writers like you that you don't need to reinvent the wheel. The greatest narratives in human history have already shown us what works. I created this course because I believe every writer deserves access to the world's greatest storytelling traditions. My goal is to help you tap into that same ancient power and transform it into stories that matter—stories that move people, stories that last.
