Travel Writing For FUN and PROFIT!

Live The Dream

     Pitch - Travel - Write - Repeat

Okay, so this may seem like an odd time to think about travel writing as a potential career.

     But perhaps not.

In this new age of lockdowns, enforced isolation, and travel restrictions, perhaps many of us are pulling at the leash, straining to experience the Earth once more; to see and feel the real world around us; to soak in the people and the places of this planet so that we may share our insights and information with others.

Do you like the idea of Travel Writing for cash?

     Then read on.

From the desk of Rob Parnell, bestselling author, success coach and owner of The Writing Academy

Hello, my dear fellow writers!

When I was young, I dreamed of traveling, leaving my family and friends behind, sleeping in a tent and meditating by myself around the globe.

As it turned out I did go on an extended sabbatical when I was about 19. I spent many months in Greece, sleeping on beaches, visiting lost ruins and then hitchhiking my way around the wonders of Europe.

And even though I worked occasionally - painting boats and picking fruit - I quickly ran out of money and realized I would have to get back to the UK.

I remember crossing the border from Italy into the South of France on foot with no money to my name only to be told I had twenty four hours to find my way back to the United Kingdom.

I took the gendarme at his word and hurried home. I was young. In retrospect there was probably no need for me to leave in such a hurry!

Of course I had plans to continue my travels. The plan was to get a job and save enough money to go the South American Festival of the Sun the following year. But, you know how it is. I never saved enough to buy the air fair to Brazil. And perhaps more honestly, I didn’t experience the huge drive to go traveling as I should have. Besides which, during that year I joined a band and left home to play with them in the North of England.

     Enough about me…

     How about you?

Have you discovered the main problem associated with travel?

     Yep, it's kinda obvious really…

           MONEY.

Everything comes down to money one way or another and the pursuit of being a travel writer is no exception.

You need enough to keep going, enough coming in to pay for your adventures, to pay for your food and supplies, to pay for your mobile internet connections, your pens and notepads and anything else you might require to be a traveling author.

And to get money you have to work odd jobs, run a fully mobile business or - sell your writing as you travel.

A quick search on Google will reveal many writers who have tried and failed to sustain a travel-centric lifestyle.

It’s fine in theory and there are plenty of blogs that have been started by ambitious people which fold quickly after just a few weeks when the reality of traveling expenses comes home to roost.

The fact is writing and traveling is expensive.

...So you need to do it properly.

Introducing:

Rob Parnell's Guide to Travel Writing For Fun and Profit

     Let’s get things real.

Travel Writing is not simply about going on holiday and getting paid to write an essay on your two-week stay in Benidorm.

Nuh-uh. That’s a fantasy you need to get out of your head.

Travel writing is largely a lifestyle choice and is one you need to fully understand - and embrace - before you venture into the wild.

The easiest way to think of the travel writing life is a series of moves from one inexpensive base to another, as in physically setting up locations around the world from which you write and pitch your work to editors and publishers while on the move.

Once you’ve set up a base that is working for you, then it will be time to think about moving on, lock stock and barrel to another location.

Each move requires careful planning and self-discipline. Plus a mindset that enables you to travel light - in spirit and in mind - as well as literally taking the minimum with you at all times.

You can’t lug around half a ton of stuff if you’re trying to efficiently make money from travel writing.

My advice would be to give yourself two to five years to commit to the lifestyle.

Sure, most of us can’t do that.

We have partners and home-based commitments. We have jobs we get stuck in.

But if you’re in a position to create more freedom in your life, then now would be the best time to try the travel lifestyle.

And this course can help you prepare.

     Yes, I can help.
